There is a big difference between commercial regular fertilizer and the microencapsulated fertilizer we are recommending: Regular fertilizer is not protected against water therefore any contact with water will make the product dissolve immediately and completely. As a result of the heavy rainfalls in Costa Rica, a great deal of the product will be simply washed away towards the groundwater, out of reach for the plants and they will have little or no benefit of your efforts at all. Even is this fertilizer would not be washed away entirely, it still will dissolve completely and create a salt surplus in the soil stressing or burning the plant roots. As a solution to this problem one brought microencapsulated fertilizers to the market. Those products are more expensive due to the special coating around the grain of fertilizer. The semi permeable layer allows to release only little nutrients over time (5 to 8 months) according to soil temperature and water supply, exactly in balance with plant growth. Fertilizers of this kind proved stable and safe nourishment for your plants and will not stress them.
